Leh, the capital of Ladakh (population-27,500, altitude 11,500 feet) is the point where most visitors arrive by air, after a short flight from Delhi. The city is set on a slight rise above the Indus valley. A half dozen or more monasteries (Gompas) are distributed on the slopes that rise above the valley floor, often in high, definsible positions at the heads of valleys.
